So, there have been two things running around on the internet lately that keep coming across my newsfeed and they seriously make no sense to me. So I am here and I am asking for clarification and concrete examples and honestly for someone to explain this all to me.
Who are these man hating feminists? Where are they? Why is everyone so scared of them? This has happened to me FIVE times this week: I will see something I think is bullshit and call it out, someone will comment that my stance is understandable and supportable because it isn’t ‘man hating’ feminism. I’m 35 years old and I think i’m reasonably well versed in feminist theory and history and I have never read or met any of these man haters. So maybe I am one and I just don’t see it? Maybe I’m horribly naive? Both are certainly possible. What, exactly does man hating look like? Maybe the reason that I haven’t noticed it is that I haven’t known what to look for. I realize that tone is not always easily conveyed in a blog like this so I would like to take this time to say that I am completely serious. Someone please send me the articles, the video clips, the sound bites of the man haters.
My personal beliefs are ever evolving on a number of issues, but these are my stances on some basic gender and sex issues.
That both genders (as well as the non gendered) should be taken on an individual basis and that all humans are created equal.
That no one one has the right to tell anyone what to do with their body. That women, minorities and LGBTQ communities have all suffered indignities at the hands of the medical profession and the government of this country that should be addressed and righted.
That a woman should not be threatened with rape or murder for speaking her mind, doing her job, or otherwise living her life.
That women are fully realized human beings with no need for the male gaze, male thought, or male consideration. That this needs to be said, over and over, because too many males do not understand it.
That past and present women who call themselves leaders of the ‘mainstream feminist’ movement have displayed a running lack of understanding of the intersectionality of race, sex, gender and class and have too often made concessions that hurt other women to advance the rights of white, middle and upper class women.
That men need to be taught to seek consent instead of women being taught to avoid rape.
That women should be the ONLY people in control of their bodies at all times and that doctors should advise, but not control. Politicians should be protecting the rights of women, not trying to legislate the woman/doctor relationship around the world.
In short, I believe in choice and power resting with women in all areas of their lives. Over what they will learn and what they will read, over how they will dress and what hairstyles they will wear, over who they will love and who, how, when and where they will share their bodies, over whether they will procreate, when and how often, over where they will work and for how much, over every single decision that it is a human’s basic right to choose. I believe that women should be able to make these choices free from the judgement of men AND free from the judgement of other women.
There’s more – but that’s off of the top of my head.
Moving on to the Nice Guy.
